Barking up the wrong tree

It means pursuing the wrong course of action, or looking for something in the wrong place. The picture behind it comes from hunting dogs that chase an animal up a tree, then carry on barking at the bottom of the wrong one long after their target has slipped away.

You might use it like this: “If you think I broke that vase, you’re barking up the wrong tree. I wasn’t even home.”
