Clauses can be connected in a variety of ways. It's your choice!

My alarm didn't ring.  I was late for work.

Two independent clauses with a conjunction: My alarm didn't ring, and I was late for work.

One independent clause and one dependent clause with a subordinator: I was late for work because my alarm didn't ring.

Using a semicolon connector: My alarm didn't ring; therefore, I was late for work.

Reduction of the dependent clause: My alarm not having rung, I was late for work.
